Put the Pen Down
by Jennifer Rosario
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith … ”
(Hebrews 12:2, NKJV).
Too often, I make life all about me–my plans, goals, dreams, and aspirations. I daily pick up the pen that writes the story of my life and, like our fictional characters, map my path and itinerary. My true personal plotting style adopts a little bit of Jesus and a whole lot of me.
A recent Facebook quote stopped me. The post stated, “The story isn’t about you.”
The words reminded me that everything around me, from creation to my very breath, is all about Jesus.
As writers, we love stories. Our characters talk to us and may even guide us with their voices and personalities. We bring fictional people to life, giving them meaning and purpose.
God desires to do the same in us. Our characters can only go as far as our imagination takes them, and the same goes for our lives. Only the author of our story can take us to great heights. John 15:5 reminds us we do nothing apart from him. Through trials and setbacks, blessings and rewards, God fills in all the details of our lives. He perfects our faith and strengthens our trust in him.
We all make the mistake of holding tightly to our pains, desires, and circumstances. Maybe it’s time to open our hands and surrender them to our Creator. God has been writing your story since before the foundations of the earth were ever laid. Put down the pen and let the omnipotent author finish the story he began a long time ago.
Dear God, you are the first and the last, the beginning and the end. You are over all, through all, and in all. I can entrust my life to the great I AM. Help me to turn my life over to you as I trust in you. You are in the process of writing an amazing story. Even though you are the main character, you mercifully allow me to take part in your eternal story. And for that, I thank you. In Jesus name, Amen.
